30th Annual AGM 2015 – Bordeaux 10 YEARS on 2005 – 22 Apr 2015

Dear friends,

On the 22nd April after our AGM we will be proceed to our annual decade retrospective theme dinner. This year we will revisit the much hyped vintage 2005 which when released in summer 2006, prices were among the highest offered at the time. The vintage saw nature giving high quality fruit across appellations resulting in rich, concentrated wines and high tannin level.

For the night we will provide a selection of wine representing some of the key appellations in Bordeaux.

At a recent tasting in London on the left bank, the appellation of Meraux had some charming wines with attractive sweet fruits and bright acidity. In northern Medoc, St. Julien and Pauillac the wines showed freshness and definition, with hefty layers of tannin. Right Bank was still young with fruits masked by tannin requiring time.

We look forward to hear members’ comments on the 2005s with our own tasting experience on the coming 22nd April dinner at Hyatt hotel.

Bordeaux, Toujours Bordeaux!

Yours Sincerely,
David Ong

Lascombes Estate Event

The Lascombes estate has its origins in at least the 17th century, when the property was owned by the Durfort de Duras family. At some point before the mid-18th century, the Duras property was divided, one part the origin of Durfort-Vivens, the other destined to become Lascombes. It was acquired by the Lascombes family who held the estate for at least a century and whose family name has remained attached to the chateau ever since. In 1951, Alexis Lichine (his son Sacha resides in Singapore) purchased Lascombes. This was one year after he bought Prieure-Lichine. In 1971 the brewing giant Bass Charrington became owners followed by Colony Capital (owners of our Raffles Hotel) in 2001 and in 2011 ownership changed again to Macsf, a French Pension Group. Dominique Befve, who will present the Lascombes wines have been with the estate from the Colony Capital era, he oversaw the expansion and reorganization, the installation of a four-level gravity-fed chai as well as new equipment. The investment has paid off. The opening price of Lascombes was 22 euros for the 2000 vintage, the 2010 opened at 72 euros. Lascombes is today 117 hectares. The vines are 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet and 5% Petit Verdot with an average age of 35 years. The varieties planted are dictated by the terroir, which is a mix of Clay-Limestone and Gravel.
